About Governor Nelson State Park

Along the north shore of Lake Mendota, this 422-acre park is named for former Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson, and on clear days the State Capitol dome is visible across the water. The lakefront supports boating, fishing, swimming and a boat launch, plus a separate swimming area for pets. Inland, restored prairie and savanna surround effigy mounds, with hiking trails and ski trails running through the grounds.
