About Devil's Lake State Park

Quartzite bluffs rise 500 feet above Devil's Lake, a 360-acre body of water formed when a glacier's terminal moraines sealed both ends of a gap in the Baraboo Range roughly 12,000 years ago. At 9,217 acres, this is the largest state park in Wisconsin, sitting on the western edge of the last ice sheet from the Wisconsin glaciation. The sand covering the lake bottom is thought to have been left by that same glacial activity.
