About Powhatan Historic State Park

The Black River once carried the traffic that made this settlement matter, before a rail line built two miles north in 1883 drew commerce away. The park covers 9.1 acres and centers on the 1888 Powhatan courthouse, which housed county government from 1869 to 1968 and now serves as the visitor center displaying historical items. Four additional historic buildings stand on the grounds, along with the Arkansas History Commission's Northeast Arkansas Regional Archives, and guided tours of the structures are offered.
