About Grand Gulf State Park

A forked canyon cuts through the ground here, the collapsed remains of a dolomite cave system that once carried an underground stream. The park protects 322 acres of this karst terrain, land once owned by conservationist Leo Drey before it passed into the state system. A 60-acre section within it was set aside as the Grand Gulf Natural Area in 1986, and the whole feature was recognized as a National Natural Landmark in 1971 for its karst topography and stream piracy.
