Offshore rocks along this stretch of coastline are part of the California Coastal National Monument, protected for their geological and scenic value. Tide pools here hold colorful marine specimens that supply Cal Poly Humboldt's Fred Telonicher Marine Laboratory in Trinidad for research and study. The combination of rocky shore and tide pool habitat gives visitors a direct look at species collected for scientific use nearby.
