Dramatic red sandstone formations rise across this 3,339-acre landscape, protected within a park that spans terrain shaped by ancient geologic uplift. The area gained recognition as a National Natural Landmark in 1980, five years after the park's founding. Its rock outcrops and surrounding terrain make it a place defined more by geology than by water or forest cover.
